“Awalt engages nature’s chaos as a means of seeking out its order and immerses herself in its darks to find its light.”
Meredeth Fife Day, Art New England
Artist's Statement
My work has always been rooted in the natural world, and has developed from observational studies to expressive, evocations of nature. The micro and macro view of nature interest me simultaneously and recent paintings weave the two worlds together. Oppositional forces like growth and destruction, dark and light, interior and exterior, order and disorder, hold my attention when seeking out subject matter. In my paintings, often diametrically opposed forces coexist and create a tension both visual and spiritual. Settling in the land of the transcendentalists, and painting in their territory, has led to a greater identification with these writers philosophy of nature. In the field and in the studio, Emerson’s “transparent eyeball”, is my guide.
